Philippines. Using the ‘tikar bergerang’ pandanus
mats made by the Malay ladies from Kota Samarahan
combined with his hand-painted batiks, the Malaysian
Designer of the Year 2009 received rave reviews from
the international audience who gathered at the
Philippine Trade Center, Manila for the “Weaves of
the World”- a UN Celebration of the Year of Fiber.

Marco Polo hotel, Edric was guest designer for the
Alfonso Guino-O’s show known as “Badu”.
“It was an honour for me to share
the stage with such great Filipino designers like
Alfonso who is known as the Czar of Filipino
Fashion. I’m glad that our tikar bergerang got the
applause. Philippines is known for their basketry
arts too…but they have never seen such fine lattice
weaves like ours.” added Edric.
Dr Mina Gabor, President of the
ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development
Association (AHPADA) co-organiser of the Manila
event with the Philippines Ministry of Agriculture
commended Edric Ong for his iconic designs that
highlighted the best of Malaysian textiles.
The Edric Ong natural-fiber
fashion will next be shown in Daegu, Korea on 17th
Nov at the International Symposium and Exhibition on
Natural Dyes (ISEND) 2009 and the Kuala Lumpur
International Batik Convention in Kuala Lumpur on 12
