UNIQUE SARAWAK STYLE IN U.S.A.

Renowned Malaysian designer Edric Ong recently returned from a three week road show in America where he showcased his unique ‘Sarawak Style’ designs. He brought with him his latest ‘Botanica’ fashion collection made entirely from floral natural dyes such as the red hibiscus, yellow allamanda, morning glory just to name a few.

Ong started his show at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market where over a week-end, more than 25,000 visitors visited his booth under the UNESCO brand. His designs had previously won him several awards from the international UN agency.

“ I am especially pleased that amongst the many crafts and textiles that I brought to show, one of the best sellers and most talked about item is the Iban ‘topi tunjang’ or ‘sky-pointer’ rattan hats that were made in the Rumah Garie longhouse in Ulu Kapit, Sarawak!” added Ong.

He next held a natural dye workshop at the Earthues Gallery in Seattle working with participants in discovering local floral dyes and also hand stamping Native American ferns and leaves onto textiles. Ong was surprised to make several new discoveries which had never been made before in USA.

“The ‘stinky bob’ is considered to be a noxious weed in North America. It was brought over from Europe as ‘geranium robertianum’ an ornamental plant, but has since invaded most gardens as a weed. We discovered that it produced a nice golden caramel dye; and when stamped onto silks, it was a beautiful violet!” said Ong.

He was also pleased with the result as this was in line with his other mission , that is to promote the theme of his next international convention, ISEND/WEFT Forum “From Waste to Wealth” to be held in Sarawak in September 2012!

Through his American agent, David McLanahan of Jungle Arts and Flora, Ong in his final leg of his tour exhibited his works at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

“I am very happy with the outcome of this show. We had many inquires and buyers including several celebrity visitors. We even had Rashi Stephens (Miss India Global) and Jaymin McDonald, Professional American footballer, to model for me in a special shoot. I received many invitations to show again in America next summer!”

EDRIC ONG AT JAPAN FASHION SHOW

Renowned Malaysian designer, Edric Ong scored another first at a recent International Fashion Show in Japan by showcasing Sarawak’s hand-woven silk “Pua Kumbu”.

The show, organized at the Tokushima Castle Museum Gardens, featured twelve of his exclusive designs all executed in natural dyes.

Back in Kuching, and before going off again to do another fashion show in Kuala Lumpur, Edric Ong said: “It was an honour to represent Malaysia at this prestigious show in Japan with other designers from Taiwan, Korea, New Zealand, China and Japan. I was proud to show the best of our Iban hand-woven silk “pua kumbu” dyed in the yellow dye derived from ‘akar penawar landak’.”

He added that the Japanese audience was amazed at the new range of textiles and the intricate weaving technique.

“Tokushima is well-known as the natural indigo center of Japan known as “Awa indigo”. I also learnt a lot of their traditional methods of processing natural indigo which I hope to teach to my weavers at Rumah Garie, Sungai Kain soon.”

Edric Ong will also be showcasing these silk textiles in his collection at the “Tenun” fashion show to be held at the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur on 24th and 25th Nov.
